DIARY OF A POWER TRAINING NEWBIE PART 2
By Anthony Moran
Mar 27, 2006

Introduction

This is a follow on from a previous installment which can be found here http://www.coachingireland.com/article/article_192.shtml

Test

So our power training guinea pig has carried out his 2 x20 mins test which showed power of 287 and 282w for the efforts. This equates well with the 20 mins effort from the paddys day race using these values we can set the ranges of power that he will use until the next test in approx 3 weeks time. Discussing the results with the rider he is going to concentrate on the shorter races such as the park race and this will influence the training that he will do over the next 4 weeks. Any way we can look at that later.

The Zones

Here is the zones for the riders training over the next few weeks

The power training zones!

The rider will  be working mainly in the Threshold, VO2 and Anaerobic capacity areas. Obviously we will watch for signs of overtraining but we have used similar zones (and program) in the past   with race winning results so lets hope for the best. Also a nice feature of the Power Meter is the calories used, we will  watch this and hopefully be able to reproduce the volume of work  using different methods (i.e. more threshold than VO2 etc) later on in the season or for next season to get a peak.  It should be interesting.
