CYCLING SEASON REVIEW
By Anthony Moran (anto.moran@gmail.com)
Nov 1, 2006

This year we have published a few articles on the subject of training with power. Using the power meter software we can get an objective analysis of the season. As discussed before arguably the most important number for a rider is their power at threshold, in our review hopefully we can match peaks in the threshold with peaks in performance. Again, different races place different emphasis on different energy systems and therefore results might not be as good as expected if certain levels are neglected.

20 min power 2006

FTP development over 2006

This graph tells a very good story. Starting in November the rider could achieve 285-290 watts for  functional threshold power. This is the best  FTP week on week i.e. each point represents a week. As you can see this increased steadily over the course of the season. Some of you might query how there could be is such a rise of ~100 watts in his threshold figure over the course of a season. Normally an increase of 10% is seen as a big improvement. I can only say that this element of the rider was underdeveloped. It doesnt look as though this rider can exceed 400watts. If this is the case the only way to progress further from a power perspective is to increase the power to weight ratio. I know for this rider that this is the case and already underway! The biggest peak in power was in a good period of results and a number of very good performances occurred around this time (1st, 2nd, 6th).

The MMP curve shows the best power produced at different time intervals. For us the ideal scenario would be to see the curve shift upwards year on year, which would indicate an increase of power across all levels of training. However this is not the case here but you can see that the time in the Aerobic zone (8min-30min) has increased which led to a very successful season. However the power at the shorter durations has decreased slightly. As I said earlier the ideal scenario would be a shift upwards across the whole curve but bear in mind that if the aerobic zone is developed to a high level the rider should be able to recover quicker from the high intensity efforts. In the sprint the rider should be fresher and do a better sprint....which was the case with this rider last year. It is normal that the curves merge at time greater than 30mins.

Next Season

Based on all of this information the objectives for next year could be to improve the max power output i.e. improve sprinting. The best way to do this would be by using short bursts and med to big gears. The 20 min power also started off quite low and then rose steadily. Next year the objective will be to start at 300w and then build it up but rather than increasing week on week the rider will train at his threshold for a number of weeks and then increase the level after each training cycle. An effort will be made to increase the anaerobic element but it wont be  at the expense of Aerobic conditioning. The problem is how to achieve all of this when there is limited training time but I suppose sessions could be used to train multiple elements rather than just the aerobic or VO2 etc. Important for next year is to consider cadence. As you can see from the 2 images the bulk of pedaling was in the 50-70pm range. thisis an increase from 2005 season. This could also be a reason why max power has declined.
