THIS THURSDAY - GUESS WHO'S COMING?

Our AGM will be held this Thursday, 13 December 2007, 6.30pm for 7pm at Belfast Activity Centre.

The guest speaker will be confirmed on the evening but ensure your sport is represented and confirm your attendance asap by contacting Lyne on lynegreenwood@nisf.net or telephone 028 9038 3825

GOGGINS URGES ORGANISATIONS TO SIGN UP TO NEW CRIMINAL RECORDS SERVICE

All organisations that work with children and vulnerable adults should ensure that they have signed up to the new criminal records service which comes into effect next year.

Security Minister Paul Goggins said "AccessNI will take over responsibility from the PSNI for providing criminal record disclosures to registered employers from April 01 2008.

"AccessNI will change the way disclosure works in Northern Ireland. Organisations needing to use AccessNI should ensure they register over the next four months in time for the new service. This is vital – if you’re not registered we can’t provide a disclosure.

“The introduction of AccessNI is part of this Government’s continuing commitment to prevent crime and to safeguard the vulnerable. Not only will it make a significant contribution locally, it will create a platform for Northern Ireland to become part of new national systems.

“AccessNI will provide strengthened protections for vulnerable people and employers, through increased investment and the use of leading edge technology.

Finally, the Minister underlined the importance of good recruitment practice, warning against over reliance on criminal record disclosures.

Paul Goggins said: “Although criminal history disclosure is important, it is only one aspect of safe recruitment. Employers must also have robust employment practices in place as criminal records checks alone do not provide the full picture”.

Also those organisations currently registered with the POC's service should have received a letter that includes the following advice;

During transition, AccessNI is offering free registration for organisations in the not-for-profit sector, who register as an Umbrella Body.  Interested organisations must apply by 29 February 2008, submitting the names and contact details of at least five organisations who they will be acting for.

THE CONSULTATION EVERYONE'S TALKING ABOUT

We hosted an excellent consultation event on Thursday 29 November on the Draft Strategy for Sport and Physical Recreation 2007 - 2017 at the Island Centre, Lisburn.

The event was fuelled with passion and re-iterated the vital role of governing bodies and volunteers in sport in Northern Ireland - truly essential!

The Sports Forum encourages all our members to respond to the consultation through the formal channel (www.dcalni.gov.uk).

In order to assist in formulating your response there will be a list of all (non-attributed) comments available from the Sport NI website within the next 24 hours - www.sportni.net

COACHWORKS

Irish International Rugby strength and conditioning coach Mike McGurn, Armagh All-Ireland winning Gaelic star Enda McNulty and former NI International and Newcastle United star Ian Stewart are just three of the high profile sports personalities who will be delivering workshops on the innovative Coachworks programme.

Coachworks - recently launched at the University of Ulster by Mike McGurn, along with other Coachworks facilitators, gives coaches an opportunity to extend their knowledge across a range of topics through practical workshops, led by high calibre tutors.

Taking place in Craigavon and Armagh over alternate nights in January, the programme will cover hot topics relating to optimal performance and provide ready to use examples for those working with individuals and teams of all ages and abilities.

Mike McGurn will be applying all the knowledge he has gleaned from his experiences with the Irish Rugby team and Rugby League side St. Helens when he delivers his ‘Performance Strength & Conditioning’ session to local coaches in Craigavon on 23 January.

Former international footballer Ian Stewart will take a session on ‘Games for Understanding’ in Craigavon Leisure Centre while in Armagh, the St. Patrick’s Trian Centre will be the venue for Enda McNulty’s ‘Mentally Preparing for Peak Performance’ where he will no doubt draw upon some of the techniques employed by the Armagh Senior Team en route to their All-Ireland title in 2002.

However prior to this, Coachworks 2008 will kick-off in Craigavon Leisure Centre on Monday 21 January where former Athletics Ireland Director of Coaching, Jim Kilty will provide coaches with an insight into why ‘Functional Competence is the Key to Success’.

The importance of performance analysis in sport has come to the fore in recent years and Irish Hockey Coach Education Manager Mike McKinnon will deliver a session to help coaches enhance their analysis and feedback skills in Craigavon Civic Centre on 30 January.

Meanwhile, Armagh will play host to GAA Master Tutor John Morrison who has coached with no fewer than 5 Counties and whose expertise has also been sought by Ulster Rugby and Leicester Tigers.

To close this year’s programme, International javelin thrower and Irish record holder for Olympic Style Weightlifting Laura Kerr will deliver a practical workshop on physical strength and conditioning for female athletes in Armagh on 31 January.

“The 2008 Coachworks series will see the delivery of workshops which will offer coaches excellent practical advice on how to improve their practices,”said Ger Houlahan, Head of Recreation at Armagh City and District Council, speaking at the launch.

“We have tried to ensure that we have something which is relevant and innovative for coaches at all levels.”

Anyone who is interested in finding out more about Coachworks, which is organised through Armagh Sports Forum and Craigavon Sports Advisory Council, can contact either:

ACTIVEPASSPORT

SkillsActive is in the process of rolling out an innovative solution to recording volunteers’ qualifications, training, soft skills and volunteering activities.  Called an activepassport, the resource is an online verified record which will benefit both individual volunteers and their sporting organisations.

One of the functions of the activepassport is for individuals to identify goals for future training and to track their progress against those goals. Frank Stevens from Swim Ulster who recently attended an activepassport event in Northern Ireland said: “activepassport is the way forward for continued professional development in voluntary organisations.”

SkillsActive is running an awareness raising event in Northern Ireland on Thursday 24 January 2007.

SPORTS MINISTER ANNOUNCES DRAFT 10 YEAR SPORTS STRATEGY

Sports Minister Edwin Poots, MLA, has announced the public consultation of the draft 10-year Strategy for Sport and Physical Recreation in Northern Ireland.

The draft Strategy is the product of two years work undertaken by the Department of Culture, Arts and Leisure in partnership with Sport Northern Ireland, as well as a number of Government bodies.

Speaking to the Northern Ireland Assembly, Minister Poots said: “The announcement of the draft Sports Strategy presents Northern Ireland with a significant opportunity to ensure sport is placed on a clear and sound footing for the future. For the Strategy to be a success, we need to raise the current level of funding for sport over the next 10 years by £206million.

“We need a new, long-term vision for sport in Northern Ireland which allows us to maximise the opportunities that exist.  Northern Ireland has a rich sporting heritage, one to be extremely proud of. It should be nourished to increase participation in sport and physical recreation and to encourage success on a world stage.

“Both watching and participating in sport can be fun and fulfilling, but it also has the potential to deliver other, more significant benefits.  Sport plays a vital role in improving community cohesion, better public health, education and skills, economic growth, social development and attracting tourists to our region

The Minister continued: “This public consultation comes at an exciting time for sport following the success of London’s bid to host the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.  The Games have the potential to motivate and inspire our young people to take up sport, to enhance Northern Ireland’s sporting infrastructure and to develop our athletes.  It will also help us to put in place the foundation for a durable sporting and cultural legacy.

“Today, sport in Northern Ireland is facing major challenges and significant difficulties.  Evidence suggests that participation rates are amongst the lowest in the UK and falling and that many of our sporting facilities require substantial development and modernisation.

“We cannot allow this situation to continue.  If we are to succeed, we need a common goal, a shared vision and an agreed structure in which to take action.”

The Minister continued:  “The draft strategy offers 24 specific targets for sport and physical recreation to be achieved over the next 10 years. These are designed to address concerns in relation to participation, performance and places and include the need to improve levels of participation in sport and address under representation amongst certain groups of people; the need to improve Northern Ireland’s performance in international competition; and the question of a major multi-sports stadium for Northern Ireland.

“If the strategy is to be implemented in full, it needs the commitment of all stakeholders including Government, local councils, sports bodies and the private sector.  The success of this strategy relies on not only stakeholders’ commitment to implementing it, but also their ability to contribute to it financially.

“I have no doubt that many of the targets will be regarded as challenging.  Yet, if achieved, there is the prospect of injecting the much needed rejuvenation into the way we deliver sport and physical recreation in Northern Ireland.”

The Minister continued: “I want to urge as many people as possible to consider this draft strategy carefully and to respond to it.  The future of sport in Northern Ireland is at stake and this must concern us all.  I therefore look forward to the outcome of the consultation and to receiving comments.

“The outcome of the consultation will help shape the final Strategy which I expect to publish as soon as possible after the consultation is completed.”

To view the document please click here (please note the document is quite large) and the closing date for receipt of responses to the draft Strategy is 09January 2008.
