Exhibition Stand at the National Ploughing Championship

Tullamore, Co. Offaly, 25th – 27th September 2007

Badminton Ireland had an exhibition stand at the National and World Ploughing Championships in Tullamore, Co. Offaly. This is our second year to have a stand at the National Ploughing Championships and once again it was a hugely successful venture for us.

The event was funded under the Women in Sport Initiative in line with Badminton Ireland’s Women in Sport Operational Plan. Over 2,000 people visited our stand over the three days. We held a free entry competition which was a part of the attraction to our stand. There were 1,032 entries with one prize winner.

Winner of our Kit Bag containing 20 racquets, 2 dozen shuttles, a net and Fun, Games and Activities for Badminton Manual was Julie Patterson, a student at Sligo Grammar School. Julie nominated Sligo Grammar School as the recipient of this prize which was presented to Julie and the School by our Development Officer, David Magee.

Queries are still coming to the office on where to find a local club, interest on setting up new clubs and queries on our schools programmes.

National Badminton Week

Now an annual event, Badminton Ireland kicked off the season with National Badminton Week 2007 from the 13th - 21st October 2007. During this time, all badminton clubs opened their doors to allow anyone interested in having a go to come and play. Posters were sent out to all clubs so that they could promote their club locally. A subsidy was made available to each County Association to run an event/promote badminton during that week.

Badminton featured on both Radio 1 and TV3. There was also a text and e-mail campaign to raise awareness of badminton and to encourage former players and potential new players to take up their racquets and get out and play a game!

Badminton Basics

Badminton Basics is a new Secondary Schools programme currently under development. The programme is aimed at early Secondary School Students (1st-3rd years) with a delivery of Badminton Basics role for Transition Year Students. The programme is to be piloted in four Local Sports Partnership Areas and will include a resource DVD for teachers and Transition Year Students.

All enquiries to Brenda.barry@badminton.ie

Court Officials

Badminton Ireland Court Officials Group is keen to recruit new members to its ranks. Why?

Ø     Like many other sports badminton requires officials.

Ø     A significant increase in the use of umpires’ services at all levels in the sport has occurred.

Ø     To enhance the presentation of badminton.

What experience do I need to have? None - full initial training and on-going development are provided. What standard of badminton might I umpire? Depending on experience you could progress as an umpire from local to national to world-wide international events. Interested? Want more information? Speak to one of the umpires or contact Carol O’Farrell at caroluifhearghail@eircom.net

A booklet on the Laws of Badminton has been produced by Badminton Ireland; a copy of the booklet was sent out to all clubs in September. This is available to download at http://www.badmintonireland.com/content/templates/development.aspx?articleid=669&zoneid=15

                                                                                                                                                     Management Workshops

A number of workshops have taken place with the National Executive and Branches aimed at improving communications at all levels of the organisation and identifying Roles and Responsibilities of all officers at National and Branch level.

The Badminton Ireland Communications Day (8th September) was set up as a result of consultation with the Branches. Follow link for full details…… http://www.badmintonireland.com/content/templates/bui.aspx?articleid=601&zoneid=1

Management Training is on-going; similar workshops can be extended to County Associations.

A Strategic Planning Day is set for the Munster Branch in Limerick on 10th November.

Please contact Brenda.barry@badminton.ie for further details

Disability Badminton

Disability Badminton continues to be a focus for Badminton Ireland. Last April, we ran a Disability Badminton Coaching Course offering coaches a further training opportunity geared towards increasing awareness and skills when working with athletes with a disability

A further course is planned for this season. It is a 2 day course and will be part theory i.e. classifications, demonstrations of working with disabled groups, and partly a practical session where the group will get the chance to engage in coaching disabled athletes. Details will be posted on website as soon as dates and venue have been confirmed.

We are extremely fortunate to have acquired the services of Jim Mackay the International Badminton Association for Disabled (IBAD) Medical Classification Officer. Jim has vast experience working with disabled athletes and the sessions delivered will be of huge benefit to all coaches.

Badminton Camps

Plans are already underway for our Badminton Camps programme of events 2008.

Last year over 40 different camps were held, these were organised by the Development Officers working with county associations, leagues and clubs. Under the Women in Sport Initiative, a funding allocation of €600 was made available to each county association/League to assist in the running of the Summer Camps. A t-shirt with the First Badminton Logo was given to every participant thus further increasing the awareness of Badminton Ireland in local communities throughout the country. The standards of players at the camps varied; offering elite, developmental and participation coaching to participants.

Camps also catered for Elite and Development Players including a week long residential camp in Belfast and two day intensive camps in Sligo, Cappoquin, Co. Waterford and Terenure Badminton Centre. Coach Jens Eriksson from Sweden spent two fully filled weeks in Ireland coaching in all locations above.

All camps were subsidised by the Women in Sport Initiative.
