The information in the bulletin covers:

Resistance Training & Weight Training for Sports Coaches: First Intake
This new and exciting course starts on April 26th with an Induction Workshop in Thurles.
Closing date is 20th April

The Course
This course will comprehensively cover the theoretical and practical application of the full range of resistance training techniques. It is aimed at coaches of all sports to ensure that they have IAWLA Certification for weightlifting coaching and instruction.
HETAC Minor Award (Level 6) accreditation is being sought for this course.

Course Title
Resistance Training & Weight Training for Sport

Certification
Certificate in Resistance Training & Weight Training for Sport

Accreditation
HETAC accreditation at Level 6 (minor award) is being sought for this course.

Course Length
The course will run for 26 weeks.

Entry Requirement
Applicants should be practising Coaches in at least one Sport.

Information
The course will

  • be delivered over 6 months (26 weeks in total).
  • begin on-line on Wed 30th April (Week 1) and end on Tuesday 21st Oct (week 26th).
  • entail on-line study at home consisting of 3 lectures per week.
  • attendance at 3 weekend workshops.
  • include parallel reading and study of two recommended books over the 6 months.
  • include 5 Multiple Choice Questionnaires to be answered at intervals during the course.
  • require the maintenance of a weight training logbook during the latter part of the course.
  • require the completion of 2 course assignments on week 8 and week 16 of the course.
  • require the completion of a final course project before the 24th week of the course.
  • include the completion of the NCTC/IAWLA Level 1 Weightlifting Certification course.
  • finally conclude with a Practical Assessment for Weight Lifting on the week-end of 29th or 30th Nov.

Course Supervisor
The course supervisor will be Damien Young B.A.(Hons).

Course Tutors
The course will be delivered by a very experienced group of tutors and experts and will include:

  • Dr. Liam Hennessy, Director of the Course
  • Colin Buckley, Chief Tutor IAWLA
  • Martin Zawieja, Olympic Medallist and Chief Tutor of the German Weightlifting Association
  • Des Ryan, Tutor IRFU
  • Jim Kilty, Setanta College, coach to many Irish Olympians over a range of events
  • Mick Brennan, B.Ed & M.A (Sports Science)

Course Assessment
The course assessment system will consist of:

  • Continuous on-line assessment by means of 5 MCQs, 2 assignments, attendance and participation in the 2 Resistance Training Workshops as well as completion of the Final Project.
  • Practical Assessment by Dr. Liam Hennessy (Functional Screening Competency) and Colin Buckley (Weightlifting Coaching Competency)
  • Logbook Completion over a 6 to 8 week period towards the end of the course.
  • Martin Zawieja will provide external assessment for Weightlifting.
Successful students will be those deemed to have gained a minimum of 40% in all three components of the assessment system.

Course Timeframe
At the time of issue, the following is the course timeframe:

  • Lecture reading & study begins on Week 1 - April 30th.
  • Week-end 1 (Resistance Workshop 1 & Weightlifting Workshop 1) will take place on 24th & 25th May 2008.
  • Week-end 2 (Weightlifting Workshops 2 & 3) will take place on 5th & 6th July 2008.
  • Resistance Workshop 2 will take place on 10th August.
  • Weightlifting Workshop 4 including the Final Practical Assessment take place on Nov 29th or 30th (Some students will be assessed on both days).

Aims of the Course:
The learner will:

  • display an understanding of the background and relevance of resistance training to performance development in sport.
  • have an understanding of the theories that underpin resistance training.
  • develop an understanding of the pathway of development of strength and power as it relates to the LTPD process.
  • understand the different types of strength and power.
  • understand the basis of functional resistance training.
  • understand the resistance training pathway for young athlete/players.
  • develop practical coaching skills enabling him/her to be efficient in advancing the functional conditioning of the player/athlete.
  • become proficient in the application of the principles of resistance training when planning and implementing conditioning programmes.
  • become proficient and certified at coaching the basic Olympic Lifts and other important weight lifting exercises.
  • develop motivational skills in encouraging player/athlete progression.
  • develop confidence in delivering a practical programme of resistance training.

Learning Outcomes of the Course:
On completion of this module the learner will be able to:

  • display a comprehensive range of practical skills in resistance training.
  • be proficient at carrying out functional screening of players or athletes.
  • be proficient at prescribing corrective exercises and programmes of work following screening.
  • demonstrate a detailed theoretical understanding of the principles, methods and systems of Resistance training.
  • apply health & safety procedures within their own coaching environment.
  • critically evaluate a resistance training programme’s effectiveness.

Successful students will gain exemption from Module 2 of the Physical Fitness & Conditioning for Sport Course if they choose to enrol on this course in the future.

Diploma in Club Team Conditioning: First Intake
This new and exciting course starts April 2008. It is a new concept in coach education - coaches gain the qualification by completing 5 mini-courses over a one year period. These courses will include:
  • Stamina for Field Sports
  • Speed for Field Sport
  • Resistance Training for Field Sports
  • Functional screening and Fitness testing for Field Sports
  • Flexibility training and Recovery for Field Sports

Certification
Diploma in Club Team Conditioning

Accreditation
Accreditation is by Setanta College.

Course Length
The course is completed by the student at his or her own pace. Each mini course is completed by the participant whenever he or she wishes to do so.

Entry Requirement
There are no entry requirements.

The courses involved will

  • begin on-line
  • entail on-line study at home consisting of 3 or 4 lectures per week.
  • There will be no workshop with some of the mini courses
  • be assessed by completion of open-book Multiple Choice Questionnaire. At least one of the courses will include a practical assessment section.

Modern Stamina Training for Field sports: First Intake
This new and exciting course starts on 30th April - directly on-line.
Closing date is 20th April

Important Note
This course is part of the "Diploma in Club Team Conditioning"
This is a new concept in coach education - coaches gain the qualification by completing 5 mini-courses over a one year period.
The first course will form part of the overall Diploma course. The Diploma will also include additional courses such as: Speed for Field Sport, Resistance Training for Field Sports, Functional screening and Fitness testing for Field Sports, Flexibility training and Recovery for Field Sports.
The first course is the one available from 30th April.

Course Title
Stamina Training for Field Sports

Course Length
The course will run for 6 weeks.
It is the first in a series of 4 to 6 weeks courses which together will form part of the Diploma in Club Team Conditioning Award.

Certification
There will be a Setanta College certificate presented to all successful participants.
However, coaches who collect 5 such certificates will be presented with the Diploma in Club Team Conditioning Award.

Accreditation
Accreditation will be by Setanta College.

Entry Requirement
There is no entry requirement at this stage.

The course will:

This course will comprehensively cover:

  • Stamina/Endurance training in general.
  • The Elements of Stamina/Endurance training.
  • The Demands of the Game: Gaelic Games, Rugby, Soccer, Basketball.
  • The Needs of Field Game players.
  • Understanding which elements of Stamina are suitable to Field sports.
  • The Theory & Practice of Multi-Sprint Stamina Training.
  • The Theory & Practice of Speed Repeatability Training.
  • Planning Stamina training for Adults and Juveniles.

For Whom is this course suited?
It is suitable for coaches of all Field or Court Sports.

Physical Fitness & Conditioning for Sport: Next Intake
This is Setanta College's prime course. It takes a minimum of 2 years to complete and covers 6 very extensive Modules.
The next intake for this exciting course will be on April 26th. Applications are now being taken.
Closing date is 20th April

Next Enrolment
As stated above, the next start-up date is 26th April 2008

  • The students who enrol for this intake will be known as May 08 group
  • Closing date for Application Forms with Fees is 20th April 2008.
  • In-take group size will be limited so applications need to be in ASAP.
  • An Induction Workshop is held on the morning of the 26th April.
  • Module workshop 1 is also held in Thurles on the afternoon of 26th April.
  • Both these workshops take place at the Tipperary Institute in Thurles.
  • Week 1 of the course starts on 30th April (information will be available to students on the site from 28th April).
  • Week 2 – 1st lecture week – starts May 7th but the lectures will be available from Monday 5th.
  • Each College Week will start on a Wednesday with notes being made available on the previous Monday.

The Course (HETAC Approved Level 6 Award – 60 Credits) is delivered in 6 modules – each module will take 4 months to complete. Each module will entail coming to a central location for practical work on 2 days (normally) per module. All other work and study will be done at home on your computer. The first Module is entitled Fitness & Conditioning. Details on the topics of this and the other modules of the course are available on the College Website.

Assessment Procedure
Assessment will be continuous and for each module will involve:

  • 5 Multiple-Choice Questionnaires
  • 2 Coaching Assignments
  • 1 Final Module Project
  • Workshop and Logbook tasks

Course Fee
Students may pay per module or per 3 modules (discounted rate). In special circumstances students may pay by direct debit from their bank account on a monthly basis. Email College for up-to-date details.
