Tracing the Development Process and Needs of Irish Coaches

In 2004, NCTC conducted research on the development process and needs of Irish coaches. A questionnaire was administered to a range of NCDP (National Coaching Development Programme) certified coaches from a variety of different sports. Coaches provided information on their athletic experiences; coaching experiences; knowledge and attributes needed for coaching; reasons for coaching; supports for coaches; and effectiveness of current coach education courses. Results revealed that the development of a coach begins as an athlete. The importance of non-formal methods of coach education and development (e.g. observing other coaches; mentoring; coaching experience) was highlighted. This research also illustrates the significant amount of time coaches invest in coaching activities and the supports needed for coaching. Click on link to read full report Irish Coaching Research

    LISPA Consultation Paper

You are invited to review the new model for 'Lifelong Involvment in Sport and Physical Activity'(LISPA).The model has been developed by the ISC and NCTC in partnership, and is written as a policy document for the attention of all those involved in sport and physical activity. The paper acknowledges the absence of a clear model of lifelong involvement in sport and physical activity and the need to map out those opportunities that are available to participants.
